Icebergs are interesting...yes, I said Icebergs. No, not because they are used to fill up millions of water bottles every year, but rather because with icebergs, the part we see above the water line makes up only about 10% of the actual iceberg. The larger portion, nearly 90%, lies under the water’s surface. It’s interesting how similar human beings are to icebergs. Rich and Yvonne Dutra-St. John in their book, Be the Hero You’ve Been Waiting For, write:
“Many of us live our lives as if we are icebergs, floating aimlessly in the sea of life and largely submerged. We hide most of ourselves, especially our most vulnerable places below ‘the waterline’. Like a typical iceberg, we show only about 10% of ourselves, the part above the water.”
That 10% above the waterline is what you could call our image. It’s what we want people to see and know about us. Unfortunately, we are judged every day, not by who we are, but by this 10% that we show.
Yet, these judgments are usually proven wrong when you finally get to know someone. In the Bible, the writers challenge us to not judge someone by their appearance or refrain from giving someone better treatment based off how they look (James 2, Matt. 23). Yet, it’s so easy to do that because it takes a lot of time to get to know someone while it only takes a second to judge them.
I encourage you guys this week to ask yourself these questions:
And remember, the Campus Life leaders are here and want to know the real you. Feel free to call or text one of us to meet up sometime and maybe share how you answered those questions.
